Leadership Myths and Realities

Leadership Myths and Realities

It was exactly one year ago when my friend and mentor Carl Meadows dropped some awesome leadership wisdom bombs on us in a guest blog post. And one thing he said has continued to resonate with me. Expectations are premeditated resentments. Let that sink in for a minute. Just think of all the expectations you have not only for those around you, but also for yourself. And think about how many times you’ve been frustrated or challenged as a leader because you or someone else failed to meet those expectations. And while certainly there is a case to be made for setting and clarifying expectations as a leader; too often, expectations go unspoken and when expectations aren’t met we become resentful. As leaders we put a lot of pressure on ourselves, and set really high expectations based upon leadership myths, we believe to be true. But these expectations are not realistic so we set ourselves up to fail and be disappointed. And this takes away from the realities of leading. To lead with more confidence you need to have a clear picture of real leadership and understand the myths that get in the way.
