This is a summary of the tips, suggestions, and lessons I shared in the Living Your Ideal Global Life Summit hosted by Authentizen and Small Planet Studio January 13-17,2014 and in the Encore Presentation on April 1, 2014. Whether you are a first time or seasoned traveler, my presentation “Make Your First Time Abroad Rock” provides thoughtful insight for your next global adventure.   My Global Life! I was only 16 the first time I traveled abroad, and it ignited an enduring passion for living a global life. As a young adult I did a 6 week cultural exchange in Spain and a semester abroad in France. Then, I started my professional career teaching English as a Second Language in South Korea, and worked in International Education for almost 20 years. As of today, I’ve traveled to 20 countries, and I’ve been fortunate enough to work and make friends with people from all over the world. I am living my ideal global life with my global mindset, my professional work in intercultural training, in my volunteer work with international organizations, and through travel with friends and family.   How can you make your time abroad rock? Consider the following factors before living or working abroad: What is your goal? What kind of experience do you want to have? What experiences have others had? Research; What do I need to know? Take concerns from family and friends seriously, and: Provide as much information as possible about the program, country, culture, potential risks, and safety measures. Create a plan for handling emergencies abroad and at home. And discuss, what constitutes an emergency. Discuss how you will communicate on a regular basis, and in case of emergency. Note: Be mindful about what information you share while you are abroad. Don’t cause unnecessary worry.   How can you translate your global experience on your resume? Our global life experiences can be quite transformative and very personal. This can make it difficult to articulate our experiences abroad to others; what we have learned, and how we have changed. However, those experiences not only make you a better person, but also make you a more competitive candidate for almost any job.   As a result of your experiences, it is likely that you are more self-aware, flexible, and confident. You have foreign language skills and intercultural knowledge. You have developed the ability to: Adjust and adapt to various situations with high levels of uncertainty Work with people from diverse and different cultural backgrounds Manage change and uncertainty Tolerate ambiguity Navigate new environments Recover from mistakes and take on new behaviors These new skills can be highlighted in your cover letter or throughout your resume. You can also mention them in an interview if and when they ask about your strengths or critical experiences. As travelers, it is easy to take our experiences and what we gain for granted so it we must always keep in mind that traveling in itself requires courage, risk taking, and a sense of adventure.   Buy the Create Your Ideal Global Life Jumpstart Bundle!
